Its courtyards under the heritage oaks, the second-floor event space, and that particular Montrose light are exactly the kind of setting I built this practice to photograph. Hotel Saint Augustine opened as Bunkhouse's first Houston hotel — five two-story buildings on a Montrose block off Loretto Drive, stitched together by lushly planted courtyards and winding paths under mature heritage oaks. There's a quiet courtyard pool, an intimate lobby bar, and Aaron Bludorn's Perseid restaurant on site. It sits steps from the Menil Collection, in the part of Houston with the most character. For a wedding, it gives you something rare in the city: a design-forward, human-scaled setting where the whole day can unfold across gardens and rooms rather than one ballroom.
How I photograph a wedding here
The hotel rewards a photographer who works with the light rather than against it — the oaks and courtyards throw soft, dappled shade that film loves, and the low Montrose evening turns the whole block gold. I shoot it the way I shoot everything: on film and digital both, unhurried, close to the moments. The second-floor space and outdoor balcony hold a reception of up to about 250, but the hotel is at its best when the day is allowed to wander — a first look in a quiet courtyard, portraits under the oaks, dinner that spills into the gardens as the light goes.
